Aung San Suu Kyi Biography

Aung San Suu Kyi is a Burmese politician, diplomat, and author who is the First and incumbent State Counsellor and Leader of the National League for Democracy. She is the first woman to serve as the country's head of government. She has served as the General Secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD) since 2011.

S uu Kyi was born on June 19, 1945, in Rangoon, British Burma. She is the youngest of three children of Aung San, a nationalist leader considered the father of modern-day Myanmar, and Khin Kyi, a diplomat.

In 1988, Suu Kyi returned to Burma to care for her ailing mother. While there, she was drawn into the pro-democracy movement, which was demanding an end to military rule. In 1989, Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest by the military government for her political activities.

Suu Kyi was released from house arrest in 2010 and, in the 2012 parliamentary elections, the NLD won a landslide victory. However, the military government refused to relinquish power and instead created a new role for Suu Kyi, that of State Counsellor, a position similar to that of a prime minister.

Suu Kyi has faced criticism for her handling of the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, in which the Myanmar military has been accused of committing human rights abuses against the Rohingya, a Muslim minority group. Suu Kyi has denied the accusations and has faced international backlash for her failure to speak out against the violence.
